VEGANMOFO III

No I’m not swearing at you in some weird vegan way :) veganmofo

VeganMoFo is the Vegan Month of Food, being celebrated throughout cyberspace by bloggers who are interested in all things vegan.
Here’s the VeganMoFo challenge: for the month of October, blog every weekday about vegan food.

And so, I’m excited to say that I will accept this challenge.
I will finally face tempeh head on.
I will explore new ways to enjoy nutritional yeast.
I will debate the value of bamboo vs plastic cutting boards.
I will cook up a storm from my billions of cookbooks and share my results with you.
I will veganize the heck out of any non-vegan recipe that crosses my path.

I’m excited.
I hope you are too.
Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, omnivore, flexitarian, whatever (!)
I’m sure you’ll find the VeganMoFo experience to be fun and educational.
And if you are a blogger, I hope you’ll join me!  :)

On another note, here’s the latest Marty Update!DSC_0157
As you  know, Marty had her second surgery two weeks ago to remove her fibro sarcoma.
We go the biopsy results back last week and learned that Marty is now cancer free!
Today I am taking Marty back to South Paws to get her stitches removed.
And thus this chapter has ended.
I am ecstatic!

Peace and love,

Hello from WI

I am LOVING my visit to Wisconsin!wisconsin

After a harrowing travel experience, we arrived in Green Bay on Thursday evening and got to our B&B in Door County pretty late. We stayed at the Whistling Swan in Fish Creek and it was such a great place :)

The next day we explored Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Egg Harbor – found a great little spa (the Lavendar Spa) where we got massages, and then we discovered the Greens and Grains health food store/restaurant in Egg Harbor that had yummy raw / vegan food for us.

From there we headed out to Neenah and saw tons of friends of mine from high school. I have some pics that I’ll share later but in summary it was AWESOME to see everyone. Things have changed in my hometown just enough to feel like things have changed but at the same time it all felt the same. I know that sounds confusing :)   I’ll reflect on this more later – I’m extremely pooped right now and need to hit the hay pretty soon.

Run

I went for a run this morning in Neenah. I ran for about 50 minutes and really wasn’t sure how far I went until I discovered a super cool “Map My Route”  program at www.beewellmiles.com/MapYourRoute. I now know that I ran 6.053 miles! I wanted to share the map I made with you so you could see how awesome this program is but I can’t figure out how to do that and like I said I am pooped! I’ll try again later but in the meantime check out the site :)

G’night for now…

Some Observations on Running

Ahhhh….Sunday. Lately D and I have been taking it easy on the weekends, which means that besides me teaching two yoga classes and both of us working out, we haven’t been doing much else. I’m really enjoying my slow, sweet August – September is going to be a different story!

Run

So since RIT (the “Runner in Training”) improved her time last time we went running (which was Friday), we changed  from one minute run / one minute DSC_0002walk to TWO minutes run / one minute walk. So here’s what we did today:

  • walk 4 minutes
  • run 2 minutes / walk 1 minute for 21 minutes
  • walk 2 minutes

RIT did AWESOME! Here’s what I’m learning from our runs:

  1. Taking it “easy” when you start running is the way to go. While tempting as it may be to just go out and run as far as you can, it’s far better to pace yourself so that you are injury free and actually liking what you are doing. Finish your first runs feeling like you could have done more.  :)
  2. We want to see progress. Always. So better to start slow and jog short distances so that you can enjoy seeing yourself progress.
  3. For some reason our brains tend to freak out when we start running. Probably because the breath becomes labored? It’s essential to breathe calmly. To do this just slow down and focus on deep, extended breathing.
  4. When you want to stop running and walk, ask yourself “do I really need to do?” Most likely, if you’ve been gradually building up your endurance,  your breathing is fine and your body is fine. You can go a little further. When I really think about it, I stop mostly when I’m feeling bored. I can almost always go further than I think I can.

Interestingly, all of these observations are about what happens in the mind!

Meme Blog Award!

Thank you Kate for this blog award!

Here are the rules:
1. Share 7 tidbits about myself.
2. Share the award with 7 blog friends.

7 tidbits about myself:

  1. I’ve always been athletic – I can’t even remember a time in my life didn’t include some kind of sport or activity in it.
  2. I can touch my tongue to my nose.
  3. I’m TERRIBLE at Trivial Pursuit. You definitely don’t want me on your team!
  4. I am studying to be a Yoga Therapist through The Viniyoga Institute. I’m VERY excited about this training :)
  5. I teach yoga full time but I don’t consider it “work” at all.
  6. I cannot stand to have cold air blowing on me – it literally hurts my skin!
  7. I am making my way through the Vegetarian Food For Thought podcasts in iTunes. They are excellent – I like to listen to them while I am walking the dogs in the morning.

The 7 blog friends I would like to pass this award along to:

  1. Bountiful Living Wellness – Kate gives great nutrition advice and I love her Friday Stone!
  2. Little Speck on Big Planet - If you are looking for nutritious and delicious recipes, Kristen has tons for you to try.
  3. Myspace.om - Peggy is always “right on” with her life’s observations, and she does it with a great sense of humor.

Random Thoughts on Food, Yoga, Running

I’m about to go for a run. It’s dreary out and that’s great running weather!

But first – a few random thoughts turning around in my mind today:

  • The strawberry “scones” I made yesterday turned out more like a cake. I need to use frozen Earth Balance, knead the dough, and use dried fruit
    Rosie and Stella Napping Together

    Rosie and Stella Napping Together

instead of fresh. Can’t wait to try this again but I keep eating the finished products and that needs to stop right now! Any volunteers out there willing to eat the results of my baking forays?

  • I’ve been reading about eating just two meals per day – breakfast and then a later lunch, around 130pm or so. I’m not sure I could do that but apparently eating that way is conducive to better sleep since your body isn’t working on digesting your dinner. What do you think? I ate popcorn last night and then slept horribly so I’m starting to wonder…
  • Since I slept so poorly, I woke up late and missed doing my yoga practice today. I’m going to try to fit it in tonight and if that doesn’t work I’m going to journal about it so at least I’m keeping my thoughts on my practice. Oh and I learned yesterday that it’s actually FORTY days, not 21, to build a new habit. So I’m halfway there :)
  • A student told me today that she’s learned through her home practice that there is tremendous value in the stillness between asanas. Isn’t that awesome?
  • I’d like to vary my workouts. I’d like to get the P90X but it seems like such a huge financial commitment after buying the weights and the pull-up bar and the bands and the videos. Are there any good, less expensive alternatives to P90X out there?
  • I just started brushing M+R’s teeth on a daily basis. It’s pretty easy and only takes a few minutes. They love the poultry flavored toothpaste!

I told you that they were gonna be random!

Routines

I do best when I have a routine. My routines help me make sure I do the things I love to do.
Without them, I think I would spend all day drifting around, surfing the internet, and then being mad at myself for not getting anything done!

My mornings go like this:

6am: Wake up. Ok sometimes it’s 630 or 7am but usually around 6am.
615-645am: Practice yoga
645-715am: Make and eat drink breakfast (pretty much always a smoothie these days)
715-8am: Walk the dogs
8am: Either leave to teach yoga OR head out for a run OR use our elliptical machine

The middle of the day is always different and then my evenings go like this:

6pm OR 7pm if I taught an evening class: Eat dinner
730-815pm: Walk the dogs
815-9pm: Watch TV / hang out with D.
9pm-10pm: Get ready for bed, read, go to sleep

What routines do you have in your life?
How do they help you?

Peanut…Peanut Butter…AND JELLY!

OMG I can’t believe I forgot to tell you about the Peanut Butter and Jelly Pie that I made a few weeks ago!

Where is my head?!

I recently discovered a lovely blog by Celine, who posts delicious recipes – mostly baked goods -  my favorite! Every time I look at her recipes I want to make all of them. I think Celine is my Baked Goods Hero!

The other day Celine created a Peanut Butter and Jelly pie recipe that is sheer genius. I knew as soon as I saw the recipe that I would HAVE to make it.

DSC_0201 rev

I used grape jelly – you can just see it peeking out of the peanut butter top crust :)

When I told D. that I was going to make this he informed me that he doesn’t like peanut butter and jelly.

HUH?! Is that even legal?

DSC_0176 revDSC_0175 revHe liked the PB&J pie though!

This is probably the best pie I have ever made. Really. I could not stop eating it.  The recipe is perfect.

But as much as I LOVED this pie, I WILL NOT make it again unless I have somewhere to take it! It is downright DANGEROUS to keep this pie in your home. Consider yourself warned.
