People in the media love to take things out of context and sensationalize them. Anything to get viewers/listeners/readers. Many of them seem to have no moral compass whatsoever. I agree that any of us with ideas that are not fully mainstream are expected to shut up and be polite, and hide our ideals under the table rather than possibly make someone uncomfortable. It seems to be politically uncorrect to make anyone actually think about their choices. I am not at all surprised by this.
