I’m completely shocked! AND ecstatic!
FINALLY the American Dietetic Assocation is advocating a Vegetarian Diet! And guess what! They promote VEGAN DIETS too!!!
And not only are they saying that Veg diets are OK, they are saying that Vegetarians and Vegans:
- Decrease risk of ischemic heart disease
- Have lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than nonvegetarians.
- Have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates.
- Have lower risk of chronic disease.
They also say a sound VEGETARIAN DIET IS OK DURING PREGNANCY and may “result in positive maternal and infant health outcomes.”
You can read more about what the ADA says about vegetarian diets here.
In case you are thinking about going vegetarian, here are some great resources for you:

Nice to see the ADA make this shocking discovery
I want to add two more books to your reference list. Becoming Vegan which is a comprehensive book on vegan nutrition including meal plans and charts that tell you the amount of calcium, iron, etc in vegan foods compared to meat and dairy. I also enjoyed the book Vegan Freak and I listen to the Vegan Freak podcast. The Vegan Freaks are animal activists and college professors who delve into some of the deeper issues surrounding veganism, animal rights and coping with being a vegan in an omnivore’s world.
Thanks Erica! I just signed up for the Vegan Freak podcast on iTunes. While I was doing that I stumbled on the VeganExpress – an application that is an “on the run guide to what’s vegan at popular chain restaurants and fast-food places.”
How cool is that?!
